Microsoft Israel R&D Chief Warns Isolation Could Undermine AI Leadership
Michal Braverman-Blumenstyk, who heads Microsoft's Israeli research and development center, warned in an interview published on November 6 that Israel could not maintain technological leadership in isolation. She said continued connections with international academia, economic institutions and customers were essential. “We will not manage on our own,” Braverman-Blumenstyk said. She called for a consortium bringing together government, technology-company leaders and academia to improve education. She also said Microsoft focuses its educational work on disadvantaged populations. Braverman-Blumenstyk said she had decided about three and a half years earlier to turn the Israeli operation into an artificial-intelligence center of excellence. Its approximately 30 product groups include work on Microsoft Fabric and sovereign cloud. She said AI lets developers spend less time on routine coding and more on architecture, planning, complex problems and quality. She also supported regulation and safeguards alongside AI adoption. Her tenure ends in December, after 13 years at Microsoft and six and a half leading the center. During her leadership, the workforce at the Israeli center doubled to approximately 3,000, according to the figures she gave in the interview.
