Israel Confirms It Struck Syrian Air Base to Stop Turkish Deployment Near Aleppo

Courtroom-sketch editorial illustration of a bomb-damaged hardened aircraft shelter at a Syrian air base: a thick concrete arch fills the left and centre of the frame, its shell cracked and blackened and its rear collapsed into a heap of broken slabs, a wrecked armoured vehicle sunk in shadow at the shelter mouth, loose concrete blocks and tyre-rutted mounds of churned earth spreading across the dirt apron in the foreground and a raw earth berm rising at right, drawn in warm ochre and slate-blue

The Prime Minister's Office said late Tuesday that Israel carried out the pre-dawn strike on the Abu al-Duhur air base in Syria's Idlib province, its first official acknowledgment of responsibility. Israel and Syria had agreed to a security status quo, the statement said, and Syria was about to breach it by permitting Turkish troops to deploy at an air base near Aleppo. Israel warned Syria repeatedly that such a deployment would threaten its security, but Syria ignored the warnings. Israel will not tolerate threats to its security and would welcome a return to the status quo, the office said. Four strikes damaged the base's runway, and no casualties were reported.
