Judit Polgár Declines Hungary Presidency Nomination
Judit Polgár, the Hungarian Jewish grandmaster widely regarded as the greatest female chess player, declined Prime Minister Péter Magyar's invitation to become Hungary's next president. Polgár said she did not feel strong enough to accept the historic responsibility of uniting a divided nation. Magyar said he regretted but respected her decision and thanked her for what she has done for Hungary. Parliament must elect a successor within 30 days after Tamás Sulyok's mandate ended under a constitutional amendment, while Speaker Ágnes Forsthoffer serves as interim head of state.
