Iran-Linked Media Says Tanker Exploded After Hormuz Mine Strike

Courtroom-sketch editorial illustration of a damaged oil tanker trailing a long plume of black smoke across open water

Iran-linked media reported that an unidentified oil tanker exploded Sunday after striking a naval mine in the Strait of Hormuz. The report said the vessel had left the shipping route designated by Iranian authorities, but it gave no name, flag, cargo, casualty count or damage assessment. Iranian authorities had not issued an official statement, and independent confirmation was not available. The reported incident comes amid months of disruption in the strategic waterway during the Iran war, which began with U.S.-Israeli military operations in February.
