Courtroom-sketch editorial illustration of António Guterres standing at the center of a large group of Syrian women in a formal meeting room

UN Secretary-General António Guterres met women's organizations in Syria during his visit to Damascus. He said women play a vital role in shaping Syria's future and long-term recovery, and pledged continued UN advocacy for their safe and meaningful participation in politics and an inclusive political transition. The meeting came during Guterres's first visit to the Syrian capital as UN chief, where he also met interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa and toured Saydnaya prison. The visit is focused on Syria's recovery after years of civil war and the formation of more inclusive national institutions.
