Security Officials Weigh Armed Protection for Gadi Eisenkot

Shin Bet officials are examining whether to provide armed protection for Yashar chairman Gadi Eisenkot, a leading prime-ministerial candidate, as the election campaign intensifies and threats against senior Israelis, including Iranian threats, rise. Eisenkot's current guards are unarmed, and his field headquarters chief raised the concern with the Shin Bet and police commissioner. Current law limits Shin Bet protection to officials classified as “symbols of government,” a category that does not include Eisenkot.
