Iran Grants Special Hormuz Passage to Iraqi Oil Tankers

Iran granted special permits to selected Iraqi oil tankers to pass through the Strait of Hormuz after repeated requests from Baghdad through diplomatic channels. Neither the number of permitted tankers nor their passage schedule was disclosed. Iraqi Parliament Speaker Heibat Alhalbousi had asked Iranian counterpart Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf on August 19 for "special status" to protect Iraqi oil exports. Before the war, about 3.4 million barrels per day of southern Iraqi exports used Hormuz, while oil sales supplied roughly 90% of Iraq’s federal budget revenue; daily vessel traffic through the strait has since fallen from more than 130 to single digits.
