UK Welcomes Syria’s First Verified Chemical-Munitions Destruction Since 2014

Britain welcomed OPCW-verified mechanical destruction of chemical munitions in Syria, the first such destruction since 2014. In a UN Security Council statement, Ambassador Kate Foster said Syria had worked with the OPCW to identify and declare legacy munitions and materials, and called for their complete, verified elimination. She said the United Kingdom has provided more than $4.7 million to the OPCW Syria Trust Fund since December 2024, alongside nearly $9.5 million in bilateral support. Foster also recalled that Assad-regime chemical attacks killed more than 1,400 people at Ghouta and said accountability remains necessary.
