Israel Votes With U.S. Against Cuba’s Annual UN Embargo Resolution
Published
Israel voted on Wednesday, October 28, against Cuba’s annual resolution at the United Nations calling for an end to the U.S. economic, commercial and financial embargo on the island, according to Israel’s ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon. The General Assembly’s published schedule placed the Cuba item before its 28th plenary meeting in New York. Danon announced Israel’s position after the vote in a Hebrew post. Danon said Israel had opposed the Cuba-sponsored text again this year. He described Cuba as a military dictatorship and accused its government of suppressing citizens and denying them basic freedoms. He also said Israel was proud to stand with the United States on an issue he called important to Americans. Those descriptions of Cuba and the significance of the vote are Danon’s stated position; his post did not give an overall vote count. The UN’s October 28 program identified the draft as A/81/L.5 under agenda item 37. Cuba submitted that text on October 5. It calls on states to avoid measures of the kind it describes and asks states applying them to repeal or invalidate them. It also requests a Secretary-General report for the Assembly’s next session and proposes that the issue return to its agenda. These are requests in Cuba’s draft, not verified outcomes of Wednesday’s vote. The issue returns to the General Assembly each year. The UN’s resolution record for the previous session says resolution 80/4, on the same embargo question, was adopted on October 29, 2025, with 165 votes in favor, seven against and 12 abstentions. That count describes last year’s decision only. Danon’s statement establishes Israel’s position this year; the cited UN schedule and previous-session record do not provide a 2026 tally.
