Vance Reportedly Sends Letter to Iranian Security Chief to Restart Talks

U.S. Vice President JD Vance has reportedly sent a letter to Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, seeking to restart peace talks between Washington and Tehran. The disclosure emerged Wednesday evening, October 28, in an account attributed to American officials and people familiar with the contacts. The report did not specify when the letter was sent. One person familiar with the initiative said Vance acted at President Donald Trump’s direction and with his knowledge. The reported effort is intended to establish whether the two sides have enough common ground for diplomacy to avert a possible escalation. Vance is reportedly exploring whether that opening could persuade Trump against issuing a final order for a short, intensive attack on Tehran in the coming weeks. Earlier Wednesday, Iran’s Abbas Araghchi said his country remained in continuing contact with intermediaries and was reviewing ideas for implementing its seven-day plan in less than a week. Araghchi said Tehran continued to “give diplomacy a chance to succeed.” His statement preceded the letter disclosure and did not confirm the reported message. In remarks dated October 28, Trump said Iran wanted an agreement but was drawing out the process. He suggested Tehran might be waiting for the election and said that would not help. Asked about a possible surprise involving Iran after the election, he declined to disclose his plans.
