Manhattan Evacuation Temporarily Closes Israeli Consulate Offices
New York authorities ordered evacuations around a Midtown tower at 235 East 42nd Street after bricks fell, support columns buckled and floors sagged during construction work. The Israeli consulate in New York, which also houses Israel's UN mission, the Defense Ministry purchasing delegation and other government representatives, was among nearby buildings emptied. Consul General Ofir Akunis said all consulate staff were evacuated safely and instructed staff to find alternatives so routine work and consular services could resume quickly. Local reports said no injuries were reported and workers in the damaged building were accounted for.
