U.S. and Iraq Confirm Final Troop Withdrawal by September 30

U.S. and Iraqi officials confirmed Tuesday that remaining American forces will leave Iraq by September 30 under the countries’ 2024 agreement. President Donald Trump said Washington no longer believed the military presence was necessary, while Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi said American forces would leave as U.S. companies entered Iraq. The Pentagon said the withdrawal reaffirms the agreement ending the coalition mission against Islamic State fighters after most troops had already departed. Al-Zaidi linked the deadline to a ban on armed groups outside state control, including Iran-backed militias that have targeted U.S. facilities.
