U.S. Backs Iraq-Syria Oil Pipeline to Bypass Strait of Hormuz

The United States is supporting Iraqi and Syrian efforts to restore the Kirkuk-Baniyas crude-oil pipeline, a State Department official said Tuesday night. Washington expects American companies to help advance reconstruction and rehabilitation work. The route could let oil producers reach Syria's Mediterranean coast without relying on the Strait of Hormuz off Iran. Separate reports said U.S. envoy Thomas Barrack is leading talks with officials and companies including Chevron, while the pipeline has been out of service for more than two decades. President Donald Trump said Tuesday that major oil partnerships would be announced this week or next.
