Rebeca Grynspan Leads First UN Secretary-General Straw Poll

Rebeca Grynspan of Costa Rica led the UN Security Council's first non-binding straw poll to choose António Guterres's successor, receiving 10 encourage votes, one discourage vote and four no-opinion ballots. Guyana's Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett placed second with nine encourage votes, while Argentina's Rafael Grossi ranked third with seven. The secret poll did not reveal how the five veto-wielding permanent members voted, and further rounds are expected before the council recommends one candidate to the General Assembly. If selected, Grynspan would become the UN's first woman and first Jewish secretary-general.
