Maj. Harel Birenstock Laid to Rest at Mount Herzl After Majdal Zoun Blast

Major (res.) Harel Birenstock, 34, of Nokdim, was buried at noon Thursday in the military cemetery on Mount Herzl, a day after a booby-trapped building exploded in Majdal Zoun in southern Lebanon. His widow, Elia, said he hugged her before leaving on Simchat Torah and told her to be strong, and promised their four children would grow up in a happy home. Birenstock commanded a company in the Paratroopers' 2855th Battalion and worked as an engineer at Elbit. Chief Master Sergeant (res.) Tamir Vaknin, 33, of Eilat, the company's combat medic, was killed in the same blast. Northern Command opened an investigation into how the force entered the structure.
