Man Arrested After Disrupting Shabbat Service at Manhattan Synagogue

New York police arrested a 46-year-old man after he disrupted Friday-night Shabbat services at Central Synagogue in Midtown Manhattan and assaulted two people. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said he struck a 63-year-old congregant, damaged synagogue property, spat at a security guard and headbutted the guard while being escorted out. An NYPD sergeant assigned to the synagogue intervened immediately and took him into custody. No one was seriously injured, services resumed, and police reported no continuing threat. The Hate Crime Task Force joined the investigation, but officials had not determined a motive.
