IDF Finds Rotem Battalion’s Shabbat Drill Had No Operational Need

The IDF concluded that a company-level medical exercise conducted by the Givati Brigade’s Rotem Battalion in Gaza on Shabbat, August 8, had no operational necessity and was not brought to the brigade rabbi’s attention. The drill included simulated casualty evacuation and opening an IV. The military said its approval harmed the soldiers’ way of life, commanders held a review, lessons were implemented, and the company commander was summoned for clarification with the Givati Brigade commander. The finding follows complaints from Hesder soldiers over adherence to halacha and military orders.
