Iran Says It Will Create New Sanctions Zone Outside Strait of Hormuz

Iran's Supreme National Security Council secretary Mohsen Rezaei said Tehran will create a new, complementary zone outside the Strait of Hormuz. In an IRIB interview, he said ships approaching from east or west would be ordered to stop, with noncompliant vessels and their owners placed on an Iranian sanctions list. Rezaei said listed ships could face insurance problems and consequences if they later return through waters controlled by Iran. He added that coordinated passage could be allowed for groups of roughly 10 to 15 ships after they justify their transit.
