Border Police Seal Tunnel Hidden in Ancient Cistern Near Givat Ze’ev

Courtroom-sketch editorial illustration of two men standing inside a stone-lined underground cistern amid rubble, one looking at a handheld device while the other faces a brightly lit arched passage, drawn in warm ochre and slate-blue pastel with cross-hatching on sepia newsprint.

Israel Police said Jerusalem-area Border Police found an advanced tunnel excavation in Al-Jib about two weeks before its September 10 disclosure, near Givon, Givat Ze’ev and the security barrier. Operational and intelligence work led officers to arrest a suspect carrying digging tools. An archaeological examination found that the entrance was concealed inside an ancient water cistern. The Jerusalem-area Northern Battalion of the Border Police, working with IDF forces, completed sealing the tunnel on Wednesday night. Police did not state the tunnel’s intended purpose.
