The IDF and Shin Bet said they struck a senior Hamas operative in southern Gaza late on September 15. The reported target was Nael Abu Obeid, commander of Hamas’s Rafah Brigade and successor to Mohammed Shabana, while the military said further details would follow. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz confirmed that the Rafah Brigade commander had been targeted and said no terrorist was immune. The operation’s outcome had not been confirmed at publication, and Israeli authorities had not said that Abu Obeid was killed.
