IDF and Shin Bet Say Nael Abu Obeid Helped Hold Hadar Goldin and Nimrod Cohen

Courtroom-sketch editorial illustration derived from an archival public-domain 2017 U.S. Embassy photograph of Nikki Haley and officials inside a Hamas-built tunnel near Israel's border with Gaza; it provides underground-infrastructure context and does not depict Nael Abu Obeid, Hadar Goldin, Nimrod Cohen, Rafah or the reported captivity.

The IDF and Shin Bet said a prolonged intelligence investigation established that Hamas Rafah Brigade commander Nael Abu Obeid had been involved for years in abducting and holding Israeli soldiers and civilians. The agencies said Abu Obeid, who served as the brigade's deputy commander in 2014, took part in holding Lt. Hadar Goldin. During the current war, they said he participated in holding several captives, including Staff Sgt. Nimrod Cohen, in underground infrastructure in the Rafah area. They said Abu Obeid was killed in Gaza on Tuesday and described the operation as an important closing of the circle.
