Israel's government approved advancing plans on Tuesday for an 800-megawatt power station at the Ashdod refinery. The decision opens the initial planning process, which must proceed through the National Infrastructure Committee, and does not authorize construction. The Environmental Protection Ministry opposes adding fossil-fuel generation in the already polluted industrial area, while the Ashdod-Hevel Yavne environmental union and regional authorities also objected. The Energy Ministry said environmental and planning concerns would be examined during the process and that it remained committed to protecting residents and the environment.
