The Israel Defense Forces said on October 28 that an interceptor had been launched toward a suspicious aerial target in the area where Israeli soldiers are operating in southern Lebanon. The announcement was published at 22:38 Israel time and described the launch as having occurred a short while earlier. The IDF said: “No sirens were sounded in accordance with protocol.” Its statement did not identify the aerial target, say where it originated or name an organization responsible for it. It also did not specify the interception system or announce whether the target had been intercepted. In an October 20 account of its operations in southern Lebanon, the IDF said Brigades 300, 769 and 4, together with the infantry training school, were operating under Division 91 to remove threats to Israel. The army described activity in the preceding weeks around al-Khiam, Tayr Harfa, Meiss al-Jabal and Majdal Zoun. That earlier account reported the destruction of more than 540 terror infrastructures, including weapons depots, and the discovery of more than 150 weapons. The items listed included rockets, grenades, RPGs, antitank missiles, launchers and explosive devices. Those figures describe the operations reported on October 20; tonight’s brief announcement gave no further operational totals.
