IDF and Shin Bet Disclose Killing Hamas Commander Who Held Omer Shem Tov Captive
The IDF and Shin Bet disclosed on November 4 that an Israeli airstrike in Gaza City on Sunday, November 1, killed Jamal Abu Saeed, identified as the head of operations in Hamas’s military intelligence apparatus. The joint announcement said he had held Israeli hostage Omer Shem Tov captive during the war. The announcement identified his responsibilities and hostage connection three days after the strike. According to the agencies, Abu Saeed had previously supervised the training of Hamas operatives outside the Gaza Strip and commanded an anti-tank battalion. He had also been responsible for military specializations in Hamas’s Central Brigade. They described him as an important source of organizational knowledge and said he managed Hamas’s relations with various countries, without naming those countries. The joint announcement said Abu Saeed “held Omer Shem Tov in Hamas Captivity.” The agencies also accused him of advancing terrorist plots against Israeli troops and civilians throughout the war, particularly recently. They said he had worked to rebuild Hamas’s capabilities while violating the ceasefire. The IDF said measures taken before the strike to reduce the risk of civilian harm included precision munitions and aerial surveillance. The forces said they remained deployed in accordance with the agreement and would continue acting to remove threats.
