Jewish Governor Josh Shapiro Wins a Second Term in Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, a Jewish Democrat, has won a second term, according to an election-night projection. Shapiro defeated Republican challenger Stacy Garrity, the state's treasurer, in the November 3 election. His running mate, incumbent Lieutenant Governor Austin Davis, also won reelection. The projection does not provide a certified final result or a final winning margin. Garrity ran with Jason Richey and had President Donald Trump's endorsement. The contest pitted the incumbent governor against another statewide elected official. Shapiro entered the election as Pennsylvania's 48th governor, having taken office in January 2023 after previously serving as the state's attorney general. In his prepared inaugural address on January 17, 2023, Shapiro identified himself as an American of Jewish faith. "Along the winding road that led to this moment, I’ve been grounded in my faith and family," he said. His official biography describes his father as a pediatrician and his mother as an educator, and says their example and his faith inspired him to enter public service. His official biography lists his service as attorney general from 2017 to 2023, chair of the Montgomery County commissioners from 2011 to 2017, and state representative from 2005 to 2011. Shapiro and his wife Lori, his high-school sweetheart, have four children.
