Jewish Senator Jon Ossoff Wins Reelection in Georgia

Jewish Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff was projected to win reelection in Georgia on November 3, defeating Republican Representative Mike Collins. The media call kept the seat in Democratic hands during a congressional election in which control of the Senate was at stake. The campaign exposed divisions among Jewish voters over Israel. Some Jewish supporters criticized Ossoff for supporting restrictions on particular American arms sales to Israel. In July 2025, he voted to block a rifle sale while opposing a separate measure targeting air-to-ground munitions. Ossoff distinguished his criticism of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s handling of the Gaza war from his support for Israelis facing rocket and missile attacks. Before the election, Jewish political organizations offered competing assessments of the candidates. Republican Jewish Coalition spokesperson Sam Markstein defended Collins’s relationship with Jewish voters and pointed to his voting record on Israel. “Mike Collins has been a friend to the Jewish community,” Markstein said. Halie Soifer, chief executive of the Jewish Democratic Council of America, defended Ossoff’s support for Israel’s security and its future as a Jewish and democratic state. Her organization had endorsed him. Those differing assessments formed part of the pre-election debate over the candidates’ records and their relationships with Jewish constituents.
