Gafni Makes Yeshiva Students’ Status His Sole Coalition Test

Courtroom-sketch editorial illustration of Moshe Gafni standing and raising one finger beside seated Aryeh Deri in the Knesset chamber, drawn in warm ochre and slate-blue pastel with cross-hatching on sepia newsprint.

Degel HaTorah chairman Moshe Gafni said he would go with whichever political leader resolves the status of yeshiva students, describing that as his only consideration. His statement answered Shas chairman Aryeh Deri, who said on Channel 14’s The Patriots that he did not believe Gafni would join Gadi Eisenkot. The exchange places the draft-law dispute at the center of Haredi coalition positioning ahead of the 2026 Knesset election. Gafni did not name a preferred candidate or specify what legislative terms would satisfy his condition.
