Family Says Russian-Israeli Historian Held on Espionage Suspicion

Family representatives say Russian-Israeli historian Artyom Kirpichenok is being held on suspicion of espionage and contact with a foreign-intelligence agent, though Israeli authorities have not publicly confirmed the allegation. Kirpichenok, 51, was detained by the Shin Bet at Ben-Gurion Airport after arriving from Yerevan on August 2 and remains in custody. His family says the suspected contact was neither Lebanese nor Iranian, while the country involved and precise accusations remain unknown. Russia’s presidential Human Rights Council has appealed to the UN for disclosure of the detention grounds and access to legal and medical assistance.
