Hegseth Rejects Impeachment Push Over Iran War

U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth rejected an effort to impeach him over the Iran war in a video released on Thursday, November 5. His response came as Representative Thomas Massie prepared to bring the dispute back before the House of Representatives when Congress returns next week. Speaking outside the Pentagon, Hegseth called the impeachment effort a sham and said, "we don’t back down." He also urged further military funding. The video appeared on his official account on Thursday evening, accompanied by a statement promising to defend the republic. Massie announced eight articles of impeachment on September 15. His resolution alleges that Hegseth continued hostilities against Iran beyond 90 days without congressional authorization and violated the War Powers Resolution. Those are allegations made by the congressman in support of removing Hegseth from office. The resolution makes the duration and legal authority for the Iran campaign central issues in the impeachment effort. President Donald Trump said on Thursday that he intended to keep Hegseth in his post. In an interview on Wednesday night, Massie said he planned to introduce his resolution on Monday or Tuesday and believed Republican defections could give it enough support to pass.
