Tibi Says Democrats Hurt Abu Shehadeh’s Chances Before Supreme Court

Courtroom-sketch editorial illustration of an empty Supreme Court of Israel courtyard, with a pale stone wall, narrow windows, three pomegranate sculptures, olive and cypress trees and small Israeli national flags. Archival April 2004 institutional context; does not depict the October 2026 interview, a hearing, the politicians or judges.

Ta’al leader MK Ahmad Tibi criticized Yair Golan and the Democrats for supporting Sami Abu Shehadeh’s disqualification in a Sunday interview. Tibi said their position harmed Abu Shehadeh’s chances before the Supreme Court, arguing that judges might hesitate to take a position to the party’s left. He also claimed the Democrats were paying an electoral price among Arab voters, without citing polling figures. Tibi described Abu Shehadeh’s choice between awaiting a reasoned ruling and accepting Supreme Court President Isaac Amit’s suggestion to withdraw. He said he and Yousef Jabareen told Abu Shehadeh they would support whatever he and Balad decided.
