Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan told U.S. President Donald Trump on October 28 that Turkey was pursuing diplomatic solutions to developments in the Strait of Hormuz and Yemen, according to the Turkish presidency's communications directorate. Their telephone conversation also covered bilateral relations and other regional and global issues. The directorate said Erdoğan told Trump that the Mecca Joint Defense Alliance was closely following developments in Hormuz and Yemen. Turkey was working “for the issue to be resolved through diplomacy,” the readout said. The statement did not identify the alliance's member countries or announce a negotiated agreement on either issue. Erdoğan also said Turkey would continue efforts to improve relations with the United States and accelerate cooperation across all fields. The Turkish readout linked that effort to what it described as the 100th anniversary of the establishment of Turkish-American relations next year. On the war between Ukraine and Russia, Erdoğan said Turkey was ready to support efforts to revive diplomacy and bring the war to an end through that process. According to the Turkish account, Trump conveyed Republic Day congratulations to Erdoğan and the Turkish people and wished success for the Organization of Turkic States summit.
