French Military Says Warship Escorted About 10 Vessels Through Bab el-Mandeb

Courtroom-sketch editorial illustration of the French multimission frigate Languedoc moored beside a waterfront walkway in Montreal in 2016, viewed from its stern quarter with an angular gray hull, tall antenna mast, railing and trees; archival French-naval context, not a depiction of the October 2026 Bab el-Mandeb escorts, rendered in warm ochre and slate-blue pastel strokes.

A French military spokesperson said on October 1 that a warship had escorted about 10 vessels through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait over the preceding week. A separate Defence Ministry report dated September 24 described 2 French multimission frigates deployed in the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb region. One supported independent situational assessment; the other could come under EUNAVFOR ASPIDES command to protect merchant ships requesting assistance. That dated report recorded more than 150 civilian-vessel accompaniments since February 2024 and approximately 400 days at sea under European command.
