Canadian MP Melissa Lantsman questioned Canada's Palestinian assistance and election conditions in an October 9 post. She described Palestinian leadership as being in “year 22 of a four-year mandate” and said elections were a condition of Canada's recognition last year. In a September 22 speech, Prime Minister Mark Carney reiterated Palestinian Authority reform, demilitarization and general elections, saying Hamas must disarm and have no future governing role. Carney also announced a further $100 million for humanitarian needs and security capacity building, and acknowledged Israel's continuing insecurity and existential threats from Iran and its proxies.
