Netanyahu Reportedly Pledges Non-MK Deputy-Minister Law in Achi Deal

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly pledged to promote legislation allowing someone outside the Knesset to serve as a deputy minister, as part of an agreement with Rabbi Chaim Yosef David Abergel’s Achi movement. The proposal would allow a representative chosen by the rabbi to take the post without becoming an MK. The reported understanding also envisages exemptions for yeshiva students while requiring those who do not study to enlist. Education Minister Yoav Kisch negotiated the arrangement ahead of Achi’s withdrawal from the October 27 election, with the decisive meeting held in Netivot.
