Oman and Iran Reach Framework to Temporarily Reopen the Strait of Hormuz

Oman has agreed to the framework of a temporary deal with Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, two Middle East diplomats with knowledge of the talks said Thursday. An Iranian government official said commercial vessels would enter the Persian Gulf through an Iranian-controlled route and exit through one controlled by Oman, and that the arrangement drops the transit tolls Tehran had previously sought. A Gulf official said the Gulf Cooperation Council has endorsed it. A United States official said Washington will back a reopening only without approvals, permissions, tolls or charges, calling the strait an international waterway. Traffic halted after Iran attacked shipping there following the American and Israeli strikes of February 28.
