Golan Warns Against Electing Judicial Overhaul Backers With Opposition Votes

Democrats leader Yair Golan warned on October 20 that opposition votes could help elect supporters of the judicial overhaul. He argued that candidates associated with Kohelet or supportive of the overhaul could enter the Knesset with opposition voters’ backing and obstruct changes from inside a future government. Golan said that government’s first task should be reversing overhaul legislation and reinforcing democratic institutions. He listed judicial independence, press freedom, oversight bodies, reduced political interference in policing and legal protection for the Declaration of Independence’s principles among his priorities.
