Qatari Mediation Leaves U.S.-Iran Talks at an Impasse, Sources Say

Three sources familiar with the talks say Qatar’s mediation has produced no breakthrough because Washington and Tehran maintain incompatible positions. Qatari mediator Ali al-Thawadi met Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in New York for several hours Monday to discuss a two-page compromise addressing Iran’s demand to lift the U.S. naval blockade and Washington’s demand for nuclear concessions. He later met Jared Kushner and other American officials in Washington, with Vice President Vance joining part of the meeting. The White House declined comment. Two sources said the mediators intended to continue but were increasingly frustrated.
