Avi Gil Says Netanyahu Rejected Shin Bet Proposals for Preventive Operations in Gaza

Courtroom-sketch editorial illustration of Benjamin Netanyahu speaking at a microphone in an archival portrait

Avi Gil, Benjamin Netanyahu’s military secretary at the time of the October 7, 2023 attack, said the Shin Bet had periodically recommended preventive operations in Gaza and that the political leadership rejected them. Asked about proposals to kill figures in Gaza, he confirmed the recommendations but declined to explain the leadership’s reasons. Gil also said there had been no specific warning of the attack scenario, while officials had identified weakening deterrence. Netanyahu’s response accused Gil of knowing about the approaching attack and failing to wake him in time, and described his interviews as attempts to obscure his own failure.
